What is meant by the word, "repenting?"

The Bible definition is to turn around and go in the opposite direction.

I was heading north but now I go south.

It sounds like a religious term and its variations: repent, repentance.

It is. And it's hard to do.

Why?

Most of us think that we're good enough.

If we have a job, friends, family, and a normal self-image, these confirm to us that we're not that bad.

Have you ever heard or read this? -- "I've made my peace with God."

Bible believers hope that this person has peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Romans 5:1

And that they personally, in a daily relationship, experience the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 13:14

If not, this can be theirs.

Consider the following words --

Now there were some present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." Luke 13:1-5

Then He [Jesus] opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, "So it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem." Luke 24:45-47

The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

If we know that we've believed, received, and are born from above through the Lord Jesus Christ, John 1:12-13; 3:3, 16-17 we can still be changed for the better, can't we?

In other words, we can be in a state of repentance, of changing.

Paul wrote about two-thirds of the Bible's New Testament and he stated that he had not yet arrived at full, spiritual maturity. Phillipians 3:12-14

To be like the Master, Jesus, is a worthy goal.

Until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ. Ephesians 4:13

So, we can also be changed from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Since this is a spiritual process of growth, we can understand the words of Jesus --

"Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times a day, and returns to you seven times, saying, 'I repent,' you shall forgive him." Luke 17:3-4 7

Do we have some areas in our lives that need changing?

Why not pick one and start today, with the Lord's help?

As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For He says,

"In the time of My favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you."

I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:1-2

Your thoughts?
