Receiving compliments and criticism.
Both will come.
A hot furnace tests silver and gold, and people are tested by the praise they receive. Proverbs 27:21
How will a spiritual person react?
Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take Him by force, to make Him a king, He departed again into a mountain Himself alone. John 6:14-15
Sometimes, it might be best to quietly leave a situation when people are praising you.
We are sending with him the brother who is praised by all the churches because of his service in preaching the Good News. 2 Corinthians 8:18
At other times, we could say, "Thank you" to someone's compliment and maybe get to point them to the One from Whom all blessings flow. Ephesians 1:3-4
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I [Paul] withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. Galatians 2:11
Apparently, Peter did NOT try to defend himself. Later, he called Paul, "Our beloved brother Paul." 2 Peter 3:15
‘I [Jesus] know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have no need of anything,” and you do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked...' Revelation 3:16-17
Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, that is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated.’ You fools and blind men! Which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold? Matthew 23:16-17
If the Lord Jesus Christ said these things about us or to us, what could be our spiritual response?
Be zealous and repent [change our thinking, speaking, believing, and living] because He rebukes those He loves. Revelation 3:19
If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me [Jesus] before it hated you. John 15:18
What could be our spiritual attitude and actions toward this hatred?
People will hate you, shut you out, insult you, and say you are evil because you follow the Son of Man [Jesus]. But when they do, you will be blessed. Be full of joy at that time, because you have a great reward in heaven. Their ancestors did the same things to the prophets. Luke 6:22-23
What about when we're complimented?
So, as the Scripture says, “If people want to brag, they should brag only about the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:31
Your thoughts?
